John Dennis Wheaton, 1936 - 2012


John Dennis Wheaton died Wednesday, December 26, in Lewiston, Maine. He was 76 years old. 

John was born in Biddeford, Maine, on September 22, 1936 to the late Frank and Caroline (Cyr) Wheaton.  John grew up in Saco and attended Thornton Academy where he was an accomplished student-athlete. He was the Vice President of his class, lettered in baseball and basketball, and graduated as class valedictorian in 1954. John was chosen as a Union Carbide Scholar, one of only 30 nationally. Although of very humble origins, he often commented on what a wonderful childhood he enjoyed in Saco.

Shirley Ann Greeley, 76, of Auburn, died Friday, December 21, 2012, at the Odd Fellows Home in Auburn, where she had been a resident since last February. Born in Auburn on March 25, 1936, she was the daughter of Antonio and Doris Taylor Lagueux. Educated in Auburn schools, she was a graduate of Edward Little High School, Class of ’55. After graduation she worked in the offices of several local shoe shops, including Wood & Smith and Shapiro Bros., and then worked at Rainbow Credit Union and Patrons Insurance. She was a past-president of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post #22. …

Irene Alma Cote, 85, formerly of Sabattus, ME, and Watertown, CT, died Thursday, December 13, 2012, at Bolster Heights Nursing Home in Auburn, ME. Born in Lewiston, ME, on September 11, 1927, she was the daughter of Emmanuel J. and Malvina Lizotte Cote. Educated in Lewiston schools, she married Raymond E. Cote and they made their home in Watertown, CT. For many years she and her husband owned and operated Ray’s Lunch Basket Restaurant in Watertown. Mr. Cote passed away December 17, 1974. Cecile Rancourt, of Lewiston, died on December 8, 2012, at her home. She was born on August 31, 1927, the daughter of Louis Philippe and Ernestine Hamann Gagne. She attended St. Peter & Paul School and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1946. She was married to John (Bucky) Rancourt on June 22, 1953. He predeceased her on February 18, 1996. They resided in Sabattus for over 40 years. She had worked for Prudential Insurance Company, Raytheon, Bates College office and later worked at Marcotte Nursing Home/d’Youville Pavilion as administrative secretary until her retirement in 1989. …

Robert L. “Bob” Despres, 72, passed away Saturday, December 8, 2012, surrounded by family and friends, at d’Youville Pavilion after losing his battle with cancer. Bob was born in Lewiston on February 8, 1940, the eldest son of Lucien G. and Clara A. Allen Despres.

He attended local schools and graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

He began his working career at International Paper Company in Jay and remained in the pulp and paper industry until he retired in late 1999. Over the years he worked for three consulting engineering firms and later as a self-employed contract engineer. …

Gloria F. Bilier, 85, of 143 Mill Street, Auburn, died Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at the Montello Manor in Lewiston. Born in Auburn on January 18, 1927, she was the daughter of Raoul and Lillian Lebrun Fortin. Educated in Auburn schools, she was a graduate of Edward Little High School. On October 16, 1948, she married Joseph J.L. Bilier. Mr. Bilier passed away on April 30, 2008.
