Armand J. Hamel, 1918 - 2015

Armand J. Hamel, 97, of 89 Hillside Avenue, Auburn, died Wednesday, December 30, 2015, at the Clover Living Center in Auburn. Born in Lewiston on July 9, 1918, he was the son of George and Alice Gagnon Hamel. Armand was raised and educated Lewiston, along with two sisters and one brother. On July 29, 1939, he married the former Lucienne Bernier. Mrs. Hamel passed away in 2003. He worked as a welder in Portland Shipyards prior to serving in the US Navy during World War II. After the war, he entered the shoe manufacturing industry and trained and worked as  a cutter until his retirement. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and loved Moosehead Lake, where he maintained a camp for decades. He was a fantastic pinocle player. Armand is survived by, a daughter, Anita Wohlrab and husband James of Auburn, two grandsons, James Jr of Auburn and Michael Curran and spouse Heidi of Greene, two great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, and several nieces and nephews. Armand was predeceased by his spouse, parents, two sisters, Yvette Gallant and husband George, and Germaine Sullivan, and a brother, Edouard. Funeral Notice

HAMEL, Armand, 97, of Auburn, died in Auburn on December 30, 2015. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, 2 - 5 PM. Services will be Tuesday, 11 AM, St. Philip’s Church. Interment, St. Peter’s Cemetery. Donations may be made in his memory to the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society, 55 Strawberry Avenue, Lewiston, ME 04240.
