Fernande C. Parent, 1921 - 2017

Parent Obit Pic

Fernande Rita C. Parent, of Auburn, peacefully fell asleep in the Lord at the age of 95 the evening of Wednesday, February 8, 2017, at d’Youville Pavillion Rehabilitaion Center after a short illness with her beloved son by her side. She was born in Lewiston, Maine, on September 23, 1921 the daughter of Antonio Joseph and Marie Nathalie Aldea (Lemieux) Cloutier. She married Charles Eugene Alcide Parent at Sts. Peter & Paul Church, Lewiston, on October 31, 1953. Her beloved husband died on February 3, 1983 at the age of 73. She was educated at Sts Peter & Paul School and began work at 16 in a candy shop. At 18 she started work at Pepperell Mill where she remained until it closed. She then worked at Falcon Shoe until her retirement in 1983 after many years of hard and dedicated work. After her retirement she enjoyed volunteer work at St. Mary’s Hospital, the Holy Family Parish Library and the Senior Bingo. She also enjoyed bowling and traveling. Besides extensive travel in the United States and Canada she went on numerous cruises, and toured Greece, the Aegean Islands and Turkey. One of her most enjoyable trips was a three week tour of France with her son. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading and sewing. She was an expert seamstress, often made her own clothes and made all of her son’s priestly vestments. She also did a variety of needlework such as knitting, quilting, and elaborate needlepoint and petit-point. She won a prize for one of her pieces. She remained very active until macular degeneration took away much of her independence and interests. But, to her last days, she kept up her love of reading through talking books and her video-eye reading machine. A life-long and devoted Catholic, she had been an active member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church, Holy Family, Holy Cross, St. Mary’s and Holy Rosary parishes at different times of her life. She also loved visiting her son’s parish, St Ann Melkite Greek-Catholic Church in Danbury, Connecticut, and praying and working with the people there. She was a member of the Ladies of St. Anne at Holy Family Church. She was known for her positive outlook, courage in the face of adversity, determination, laughter, sense of humor and patience which she kept to the end. She had a phenomenal memory and loved to share the stories and history of her family. She is survived by her loving son the Rev. Robert Alcide (Basil) Parent of Auburn, Maine, with whom she lived for the past twelve years, a sister Therese C. Leblond Vaillancourt of Auburn Maine, a sister-in-law Eveline Parent Morton of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband, parents, brothers Emile and Gerard Cloutier and their wives and sisters Imelda Bouchard, Antoinette Berube, Alice Fournier Rioux, Cecile Violette and their husbands and an infant sister Marie-Anne. Special thanks are due to all the dedicated staff at d’Youville Rehabilitation Center for their loving care and to her niece Florence Grenier and cousin Monique Theberge who came to spend hours with her at the end and her niece Pauline Chiles of Georgia who constantly remained in contact with her until the end. Fern, as she was known, will be greatly missed by all who knew her. May her memory be eternal.
