Joseph L. Slattery, 1932 - 2017

Joseph Leroy Slattery, 84, of 37 Fair Street, Lewiston, ME, died Friday, April 14, 2017, at his home following a long illness.  Born in Wales, ME on August 14, 1932, he was the son of Edward David and Winifred Maxwell Slattery. He served in the United States Army from 1951 until 1972, including tours in The Korean War, Vietnam War, and in Germany. He received many decorations and awards, including: Five Good Conduct Medals, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and two Overseas Service Bars. After his retirement from The United States Army, he returned to Lewiston and worked as a letter carrier for The United States Postal Service for 27 years. On December 21, 1996, he married former Virginia May.  Joseph was a member of Pastime, Midtown, Acme clubs, and American Legion Post 22.  He is survived by his wife Virginia, of Lewiston, ME; The mother of his children, Ines Slattery, of Fountain Inn, SC.  His children,  Lyndle and his wife Betty, of Manhattan, KS; Reverend William and his wife, Heather of Enoree, SC; Susan Driscoll and her husband, Frederick, of Tega Cay, SC; and Joseph Jr., of Simpsonville, SC. Brother, Carl Slattery and wife, Florence, of Litchfield, ME. Sister-in-law, Esther Slattery, of Litchfield, ME.  Brother, Orman Gayton, of Oakland, ME. Step-daughter Alice May, and her children, Azaraya and Alando, of Lewiston, ME.  Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a son, David; brothers, Clifton Thomas and Roscoe Slattery; and sisters, Edna (Thomas) Dixon and June (Slattery) Danforth.  He is survived by 15 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. 

Funeral Notice

SLATTERY, Joseph, 84, of Lewiston, died in Lewiston on Friday, April 14, 2017. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, 9 - 11 AM, followed by a Liturgy of the Word Service at 11 AM. Interment in the Spring, Mt. Hope Cemetery. Donations may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association of Maine, 383 U.S. Route 1, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074, or to the American Red Cross, PO Box 37839, Boone, IA 50037-0839.
