Plavin Obit Pic

Marcy Plavin passed away peacefully and gracefully on Thursday, November 3, 2016, at her home in Lewiston. Marcy was born in Brooklyn, NY, daughter of Clara and Alex Sakolsky, sister of Howard Sakolsky.  For 57 years, she was the loving wife of Leonard N. Plavin until his passing in 2010. Marcy moved to Maine after marrying Leonard, in 1953.  She started teaching dance at the Y in Auburn, which led to a position at Bates College, in 1965,  where she started to build the dance program.  In 1969, Marcy founded the Bates College Modern Dance Company, which produced and performed multiple dance concerts under her direction and became a haven Bates dancers. In 1983, Marcy founded the internationally renowned Bates College Dance Festival at which world class dancers teach college age students and adults, for three weeks during the summer. In 2000, Marcy and her dance alums funded the Marcy Plavin Dance Award, an annual scholarship award for a deserving Bates College senior. From 2004-2014, Marcy served as one of two faculty marshals for academic events, reflecting the Bates faculty's regard for her. Also in 2004, collected gifts from alums, family and friends funded the construction of the "Marcy Plavin Dance Studios," also at Bates. Although Marcy retired in 2005, she received the Distinguished Service Award from the college's Alumni, service, leadership, and honor organization, the College Key, in 2009.  She organized multiple Bates Dance reunions, attended by over 100 devoted alums.  She also created a short-term course, offered from April-June, in which her students presented dance programs to area school children, with upwards of 4,000 children getting their initial exposure to modern dance. Marcy earned a BA in Art History, from the University of Maine, and an MA in Liberal Studies-Dance, from Wesleyan University. She is survived by her daughter, Lynda P. Fitzgerald, sons David Plavin, and Stephen Plavin, and five grandchildren.
